Where to sleep in Djibouti City, district by district

Aerial view of Djibouti City and its coastline

In Djibouti City, the district counts for more than the hotel's category. Our catalogue publishes real prices for three establishments: the Capital Hôtel, rue de Rome, from 18,512 to 34,710 Fdj, the Golden Airport, route de l'Aviation, from 21,360 to 35,600, and the Escale International, rue de Venise, from 41,474 to 91,492. The rest of the market, Kempinski and Sheraton included, is not ours: we give their Google scores, without prices.

Which are the five districts to sleep in, in Djibouti City?

Our September 2026 Google survey lists 48 rated establishments in Djibouti City, for a median score of 4.3/5 and 6,622 cumulative reviews. Those addresses are not spread at random: the National Tourism Agency’s directory attaches them to a handful of districts, and that division determines your journeys, your background noise and the share of your budget that will go on taxis.

Google does not give the capital’s districts. The ANT directory does. So it is the directory that structures this page.

District What the ANT directory places there Our catalogue, with prices What Google scores elsewhere
Plateau du Serpent Sheraton Djibouti (21 32 80 00), Alia (21 35 82 22) no establishment Sheraton 3.8/5 over 777 reviews, rated 5 stars
Îlot du Héron Kempinski (21 32 55 55), Acacias (21 32 78 78) no establishment Kempinski 4.7/5 over 3,348 reviews, rated 5 stars; Acacias 3.8/5 over 253 reviews, rated 4 stars
Marabout and Héron Auberge Le Heron, plateau du Marabout (21 34 00 01); Sing’S Paradise, Marabout Héron (21 35 01 71); La Terrasse Villa Guesthouse and City Guest, Héron no establishment Auberge Le Héron 3.7/5 over 114 reviews, rated 3 stars
Haramous and Gabode The Villa Haramous (77 05 01 08); Auberge Sharaf, Gabode (21 34 43 41); Red Sea, Gabode 3 (21 25 14 14) Golden Airport, route de l’Aviation, 21,360 to 35,600 Fdj no establishment of the area in our survey
Centre: rue de Rome, avenue Georges Clemenceau, place du 27 Juin Atlantic, rue de Rome (21 33 11 00); Le Laurier, avenue Georges Clemenceau (21 34 23 80); Menelik and Résidence Le Europe, place du 27 Juin Capital Hôtel, rue de Rome, 18,512 to 34,710 Fdj Atlantic 3.8/5 over 223 reviews, rated 3 stars

A third establishment in our catalogue, the Escale International, stands on rue de Venise. Neither the ANT directory nor our Google survey attaches it to any of the five districts above: we would rather write that than force it into a box.

Two methodological clarifications. The telephone numbers quoted in that table all come from the National Tourism Agency’s directory, and the prices from our catalogue. The Google scores are attached to their number of reviews and their survey date, because a score without those two elements means nothing: it moves every week.

How much does a night cost in the three hotels of our catalogue?

This is the question we can answer with figures that can be checked, and the limit has to be stated: our prices cover only three establishments out of the 48 in the capital’s survey. For the others, we give the Google score, never an estimated rate.

Establishment Address retained Range Median Entry level High end
Capital Hôtel rue de Rome, immeuble EAB 18,512 to 34,710 Fdj 26,611 Fdj double room, 18,512 Fdj executive suite, 34,710 Fdj
Golden Airport Hôtel route de l’Aviation 21,360 to 35,600 Fdj 25,810 Fdj deluxe double room, 21,360 Fdj deluxe suite, 35,600 Fdj
Escale International Hôtel rue de Venise 41,474 to 91,492 Fdj 47,882 Fdj superior king-size room, 41,474 Fdj suite, 91,492 Fdj

The three gaps tell three different stories. The Capital Hôtel enters the lowest price bracket in our catalogue for the capital, with only two offers, a double room and an executive suite. The Golden Airport covers a tighter range, from the deluxe double room to the deluxe suite, on the airport axis. The Escale International offers fourteen offers, rooms and apartments mixed, several of them with a sea view, and it is the only one of the three whose range goes beyond 90,000 Djiboutian francs.

What these prices do not say. The catalogue documents neither air conditioning, nor pool, nor wifi, nor breakfast, nor the transfer from the airport. We infer nothing from the standing on display: that information is not published in our sources, and it has to be confirmed by the establishment before a booking is finalised.

Plateau du Serpent and Îlot du Héron: what does the choice change?

These are the capital’s two upmarket addresses, and the ANT directory separates them clearly.

The Plateau du Serpent is the business district: that is where the directory places the Sheraton Djibouti (21 32 80 00) and the Alia hotel (21 35 82 22). Banks, ministries and most of the restaurants are found there, which allows everything to be done on foot in the evening. In exchange, the sea there is a port: there is no beach.

The Îlot du Héron is the elegant residential district. The directory places the Kempinski (21 32 55 55) and the Acacias (21 32 78 78) there. The Kempinski is by far the most commented establishment in our survey for the country, with 4.7/5 over 3,348 Google reviews (September 2026 survey) and a 5 star rating. It is also one of the two establishments in the capital that we do not sell.

One fact deserves noting, because it contradicts intuition: the Sheraton Djibouti, rated 5 stars, is scored 3.8/5 over 777 reviews in the same September 2026 survey, while the Ras Dika Hotel, rated 3 stars, reaches 4.8/5 over 269 reviews. The official rating and the visitors’ score measure two different things. We report both, we do not arbitrate between them.

Where to sleep around Marabout and Héron?

The sector brings together two subsets that the ANT directory distinguishes, and both are absent from our catalogue.

The plateau du Marabout: the directory places the Auberge Le Heron there (21 34 00 01 and 21 32 43 43), scored 3.7/5 over 114 Google reviews and rated 3 stars in our September 2026 survey, as well as the Sing’S Paradise, on the Marabout Héron side (21 35 01 71 and 21 34 55 55).

The Héron proper: the directory places the residence La Terrasse Villa Guesthouse there (21 34 74 79 and 77 77 60 48) and City Guest, route Mohamed Al Dourra (21 25 03 53). It is the district bordering the Héron beach, the only urban beach in the capital where swimming is genuinely advised.

For a traveller who wants to sleep near the water without leaving the city, that is therefore the right geographical reflex. But the consequence has to be accepted: access to that sector does not go through our catalogue. The two establishments we offer there (the Escale International, rue de Venise, and the Golden Airport, route de l’Aviation) are closer to the centre or the airport than to the Héron shoreline.

Haramous and Gabode: sleeping near the airport?

Yes, and it is the only sector of the capital where our catalogue has an address. The ANT directory lists several establishments there: The Villa Haramous (77 05 01 08), the Auberge Sharaf at Gabode (21 34 43 41), the Red Sea at Gabode 3 (21 25 14 14) and the Waafi Residence Gabode 3, route de l’Aéroport (21 34 93 77 and 21 33 42 00). Added to these, on the same axis, are Virginia, route de l’Aéroport (21 25 45 45), and Jano House, avenue Guelleh Batal in Ambouli (21 33 92 00).

Our contribution on this sector is precise: the Golden Airport Hôtel, route de l’Aviation, from 21,360 to 35,600 Djiboutian francs a night depending on the room or the suite. It is the only establishment of the sector for which we can publish a price, and its name itself claims proximity to the airport.

No establishment of Haramous or Gabode appears in our September 2026 Google survey: we therefore cannot say how those addresses are scored, and we do not assume it. To prepare the journey, see our page on the transfer from the airport.

Is the city centre the cheapest district?

For our catalogue, yes: the Capital Hôtel, rue de Rome, immeuble EAB, starts at 18,512 Djiboutian francs, the lowest price of the three establishments we sell in the capital, and its executive suite stays under 35,000 francs.

The centre is also the district best documented by the ANT directory, which lines up addresses in several distinct streets there: the Atlantic, rue de Rome (21 33 11 00), scored 3.8/5 over 223 Google reviews (September 2026 survey); Le Laurier, avenue Georges Clemenceau (21 34 23 80); the Menelik and the Résidence Le Europe, place du 27 Juin (21 35 11 77 and 21 35 50 60); the Dar Es Salam, rue Houmad Loita (21 35 33 34); the Rahma, avenue Cheikh Houmed (21 35 55 15); the Auberge Av13, boulevard Général de Gaulle (21 25 43 43); and l’Aube, rue Nelson Mandela (21 34 20 99).

Two reservations in the name of honesty. First, the Capital Hôtel has no verified telephone number: the one carried in our catalogue could not be cross-checked, and we would rather publish none than send a traveller to someone else. Second, the ANT directory mentions a “Résidence Le Europe” on place du 27 Juin, while Google lists an “Hôtel l’Europe” at 3.9/5 over 72 reviews: the two names are close, but our sources do not allow us to assert that it is the same establishment.

Which Djibouti City hotels are not in our catalogue?

Almost all of them. A page presenting only our three partners would be useless, so here is what the September 2026 survey places at the top of the capital, by number of reviews.

Establishment Google score Reviews Declared rating
Djibouti Palace Kempinski 4.7/5 3,348 5 stars
Sheraton Djibouti 3.8/5 777 5 stars
Ras Dika Hotel 4.8/5 269 3 stars
Acacias Hôtel 3.8/5 253 4 stars
Atlantic Hotel 3.8/5 223 3 stars
Djibouti Ayla Hôtel 4.4/5 185 5 stars
Hotel Dar Es Salam 3.8/5 142 not rated
Hôtel Auberge Le Héron 3.7/5 114 3 stars
Rahma Hotel 3.8/5 93 not rated
Hotel Auberge Boulaos 3.9/5 92 3 stars
Best Western Premier DJ Hotel 4.3/5 73 4 stars
Hôtel l’Europe 3.9/5 72 3 stars

None of those twelve establishments appears in our catalogue: we therefore have no price to give for them, and we do not copy those found elsewhere, which are not verifiable at the date of this survey. These scores are Google’s in September 2026, with their number of reviews; they do not constitute our opinion.

A word on Balbala, the large working-class district to the south-west. Our survey finds four rated establishments there, for a median score of 3.5/5 and 13 reviews in total. That is a signal: in that sector, the reviews are too few to conclude anything, and very cheap accommodation may just as well be a good deal as an unpleasant surprise. We have nothing to offer there, and we therefore do not recommend it blindly.

To place these districts within the city and organise your days, the page Djibouti City, district by district details place du 27-Juin, the central market, the Ambouli gardens and the urban beaches. If you would rather sleep outside the city, our page on camps and ecolodges covers the country’s nine sites, and the one on Arta details the cheapest alternative in our catalogue, 42 kilometres from the capital. To set your dates, see when to go to Djibouti, and to gauge the whole budget, budget and costs.

Frequently asked questions

Which district should you choose for a first stay in Djibouti City?

It all depends on your purpose. The Plateau du Serpent concentrates business, restaurants and services, and can be walked in the evening. The Îlot du Héron is more residential and close to the only truly swimmable urban beach. For an early departure, Haramous and Gabode are the most practical. The centre, around rue de Rome and place du 27 Juin, remains the most affordable in our catalogue.

How much does a room in Djibouti City cost?

Our catalogue publishes prices for three establishments only. The double room at the Capital Hôtel, rue de Rome, starts at 18,512 Djiboutian francs, and its executive suite reaches 34,710. The Golden Airport runs from 21,360 to 35,600 francs, the Escale International from 41,474 to 91,492. For the city's other hotels, Kempinski and Sheraton included, we have no price and give none.

Can you sleep near Djibouti airport?

Yes, that is the point of the area. Our catalogue offers the Golden Airport Hôtel there, route de l'Aviation, from 21,360 to 35,600 Djiboutian francs. The National Tourism Agency's directory also places several addresses on the same axis, including Virginia, route de l'Aéroport, and Jano House, avenue Guelleh Batal in Ambouli. Better to book early if your flight leaves before dawn.

Do Djibouti City hotels have air conditioning or a pool?

We cannot answer that question, and it is a limit we own. Neither the catalogue nor the National Tourism Agency's directory documents air conditioning, pool, wifi or breakfast for the capital's establishments. That information is not published in our sources: it has to be asked of the establishment before booking.

Should you book your hotel in Djibouti City in advance?

Yes. The capital's hotel capacity remains limited relative to demand, and the period from November to January combines the whale shark season and the holidays. The higher-standing establishments, such as those on the Plateau du Serpent and Îlot du Héron, go first. Allow several weeks' notice, and more for the end-of-year holidays.
