A weekend from Djibouti City, that is 2 days and 1 night, is not prepared like a stay: no visa, no airport transfer, no flight. Everything starts from the city. Four formulas fit into those two days, from 4,400 Djiboutian francs per person for the ferry to Tadjoura and a day at Les Sables Blancs, up to 38,000 for the islands, Ras Korali and a night on the beach.

Why is a weekend from Djibouti City not prepared like a stay?

Because a weekend lacks everything that makes the start of a journey. You do not go through the airport, you do not apply for a visa, you do not book a transfer: those items, which weigh on classic itinerary pages, do not exist here. You set off from home.

What remains, on the other hand, is identical: the heat, the early starts, and the need to book. And one constraint specific to a weekend: local demand is at its strongest at the same moment as you. Our Arta page documents it: demand there is strong at weekends, and you have to book ahead for a Friday or a Saturday.

Four formulas fit into two days. They are not aimed at the same weekend, and that is what distinguishes them more than their price.

Which formulas fit into a weekend?

Formula Day 1 Day 2 Night Sum of the items (per person)
Rift express One-day excursion to Lake Assal, 18,000 Fdj Beach day with lunch at Khor-Ambado, 4,000 Fdj In town 22,000 Fdj
Islands and sand Full-day excursion to the Moucha and Maskali islands, 8,000 Fdj Full day at Ras Korali from Djibouti, 13,000 Fdj Ras Korali camp, 17,000 Fdj 38,000 Fdj
North coast Ferry to Tadjoura, 700 Fdj Beach day at Les Sables Blancs, 3,000 to 4,000 Fdj Camping on full board at Les Sables Blancs, 10,000 to 15,000 Fdj 14,400 to 19,400 Fdj
Organised duo Two-day tour: city and Lake Assal, 15,130 or 35,000 Fdj according to the formula — Included according to the formula, to be confirmed 15,130 to 35,000 Fdj

Two remarks on that table. The formulas are not packages sold by us: each is the sum of two or three real offers, and the amount shown is our calculation. And the last line is the only one whose two days form a single catalogue product — it is also the one carrying the price anomaly flagged below.

How much does a weekend on site cost?

The table reconstructs the items one by one. Each amount carries the name of the offer or the grid it comes from.

Item Offer or source Published price What is not included
One-day excursion to Lake Assal One-day excursion to Lake Assal 18,000 Fdj / pers. Meals, drinks, tips

The calculation for the north coast formula, so that it can be checked: 700 + 700 + 3,000 = 4,400 Djiboutian francs per person excluding the night, with the day at Les Sables Blancs at the group rate, and 700 + 700 + 4,000 = 5,400 at the rate for a single person. The night camping on full board is added, from 10,000 to 15,000 francs according to the size of the group.

And that of the islands and sand formula: 8,000 + 13,000 + 17,000 = 38,000 Djiboutian francs, including the camp’s night and breakfast, but with no midday meal at all.

What can you do without leaving Djibouti City?

A weekend can also be spent on the spot, and the catalogue documents enough to fill it without a vehicle.

Place du 27-Juin and the colonial-architecture buildings of the centre form the simplest walk. The catalogue also publishes short sea outings leaving from the port, such as the supervised exploration dive at Moucha, at 10,000 Djiboutian francs, or the diving at Moucha island at 12,000. And for a whole day without leaving the town, the beach transfer to Khor-Ambado, published at 4,000 francs per adult, leads to a serviced beach about twenty kilometres away — with a restaurant, parasols and sunbeds on site.

That is the advantage of a local weekend: you can decide on Friday morning and set off on Saturday, with no ticket and no formality.

What should you book, and when?

Transport first. In high season, boat places are limited — the crossing to Tadjoura takes about 45 minutes by fast boat or an hour and a half by ferry — and sea outings also have to be booked ahead. Book before Thursday.

The night next, and not only outside the town. Two documented reasons to book early: local demand is strongest at weekends, and camp rates decrease with the size of the group — a camp at 15,000 francs for one person drops to 10,000 per person in a group of six to ten.

Finally, check the timetables the day before. A sea outing is shifted for the swell, and a land excursion for a vehicle. Over two days, a morning lost cannot be made up.

What should you leave aside for a weekend?

Four things, and it is better to say so before planning them.

Lake Abbe. It requires a night on site, and the tours that include it last two to three days. Over a weekend, it consumes everything, and the only compatible format — the two-day Lake Abbe and Lake Assal tour — is published at 55,000 Djiboutian francs.

Obock and the Seven Brothers archipelago. None of the formulas above serves them. They demand their own logistics, and rather three days.

The Forêt du Day for two. The offer exists as a day trip, but its rate depends on the size of the group: 87,220 Djiboutian francs for a single person, 62,300 for two. A weekend for two in the Forêt du Day costs more than several weekends elsewhere.

Stacking rift and sea on the same day. No offer combines Lake Assal and a boat outing in a single day. The two-day tour separates them cleanly: rift on the first day, gulf on the second.

A word, finally, on the season. The regulatory window for whale shark watching runs from 15 October to 15 March, and it is also the period when local demand is strongest: if your weekend falls in the cool season, book earlier than usual.

How should you read the gap between 15,130 and 35,000 francs?

The two amounts designate the same organised weekend: a two-day tour “Djibouti city and Lake Assal”. One is published at 15,130 Djiboutian francs, the other at 35,000 for the same announced programme. The gap reaches 19,870 francs.

We have no explanation for that gap, and we do not smooth it over: either the basis of calculation differs — group size, room category, number of meals — or one price is wrong. It has to be settled on the commercial side. The same anomaly exists between a three-day tour at 44,500 francs and a two-day tour at 55,000 for a similar programme.

The course of action is simple: ask for a written quotation detailing the night, the meals and the vehicle before comparing. With a 19,870 franc gap, the question is not which is the best, but what each one contains.

Frequently asked questions

What can you do in Djibouti at the weekend when you already live there?

Three directions fit into two days. To the west, the one-day excursion to Lake Assal, at 18,000 Djiboutian francs, transport and guide included. Towards the gulf, the Moucha and Maskali islands at 8,000 francs or the full day at Ras Korali at 13,000. To the north, the ferry to Tadjoura at 700 francs per adult, then a day at Les Sables Blancs.

How much does a weekend in Djibouti cost when you are already there?

Our cheapest bill is the north coast formula: 700 francs ferry out, 700 back, 3,000 for a day at Les Sables Blancs in a group of six to twenty, so 4,400 Djiboutian francs per person, excluding the night and meals. The islands and Ras Korali formula rises to 38,000, night in a camp included. No visa or airport transfer is added.

Should you book in advance for a weekend?

Yes, and that is what is particular about a weekend: local demand is at its strongest at the same moment. Our Arta page recommends booking ahead if you are aiming for a Friday or a Saturday, and boat places to Tadjoura are limited in high season. Book the transport and the night before Thursday, and check departure times the day before.

Can you go to Lake Assal and come back the same evening?

Yes, that is exactly what the one-day excursion to Lake Assal proposes, published at 18,000 Djiboutian francs, transport and guide included. The site lies about 120 kilometres from Djibouti City, part of it on track, and the offer is for the day. Set off early: the basin concentrates the heat and the salt throws it back.

Where can you sleep for a weekend outside Djibouti City?

The lowest published rates are outside the capital. The four-bed bungalow at the Sinny Hill Center, in Arta, is 7,800 Djiboutian francs a night; a night in a beach camp at Ras Korali about 17,000 francs per adult, dinner and breakfast included; a night on Khor-Ambado beach about 15,000. In Djibouti City, the catalogue's cheapest double room starts at 18,512 francs.
